IPOH TRIP (4 days3 nights) PART 4

Day 4

Sekeping Kong Heng
The last 2nd station we visit Sekeping Kong Heng, Sekeping Kong Heng in the charming old town of Ipoh , is the latest additional to the Sekeping family of retreats.
It is located in a 3 storey neo-classical building which also houses a famous coffee shop of same name on the ground floor that serves great coffee and the best local dishes in the town.
ALL effort has been made to preserve as much of the character of the existing building as possible in contrast to the surrounding new architecture interventions.

In addition, an extension has been added at the back , tucked away to reveal an inner courtyard with a dramatic stairway to take guests up to their rooms.

IS also used as a hostel to house theatre performers who performed in the adjacent theatre building that was burn down in the 50s.
last but not least, our sem 3 group photo (sorry being like a monkey XP )

Kellie's Castle
The last station is Kellie's Castle we went back to K.L , Upon entering the area i was dumbstruck by the view of the magnificent structure. Before entering and buying tickets you can read on the wall of the history of Kellie's Castle, a pic of the owner was also displayed. It was so very interesting that a house was built that way there in Perak!
I always think this is quite an interesting place to bring friends who visit me in Ipoh. The story behind this castle is a doctor showing his love for his wife. He wanted to build this castle for his wife who didn't live to see the completion of it.

The signage were clear, the story was well told, but it leave enough room for the imagination to wander, gives a glimpse to how the colonials lived at that time. The stories that the place is hunted adds to the romanticism of the mansion

It's a very big castle with a helicopter landing pad, surrounded by a river which use to be full of crocs. To get there we used to need to take boat across the river but now a bridge was built.

The building is unique with lots of secret doors and alleys; even there is a underground which is dark. Some said it lead to other parts of the house. Interesting architecture and history.

OLD Vs NEW: Can Contemporary and Historical Architecture Exist?

In this 21st century , architecture always bring out unexpected ideas, they brave enough to explore some to combine two building with different characteristic or element. Lots of example been built outside of Malaysia, we could found some in here too. For example, Sekeping Kong Heng in Ipoh is a historical building, but they try to renovate it, build the modern hostel and swimming pool on the second floor. Although the façade still maintain the same, but the interior was design with the combination of historical and post-modern , its created a very strong definition , brings out different aesthetic value from the others, the building itself have balance the overall at the same time.

Unfortunately, the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the people were criticism and debate about the building, because the crystal has taken away much of the attention from the actual contents of the Royal Ontario Museum and it also monopolize the original architecture. Based on my reader Susan Macdonald, is building losing its soul? The crystal constructed by aluminium, steel frame and glass with 5 interlocking prismatic structures. Because of the slanting wall, it’s hard to exhibits the display and wasted the space, it definitely loose by the main purpose of the museum, form always follow function, that’s why is unaccepted by public.

But in other successful cases, the iconic glass pyramid, the Louvre in Paris been accepted by public with many compliment and praising it as a masterpiece .Based on my readers Nathan Robinson, there’s a key question the city must ask itself in weighing every proposed development, “we must build in the style of the era because it is the style that people of the era build in.” In my opinion, one of the most successful key because the additional of contemporary does not interfere with the interior exhibit and the historical artwork. The pyramid was built independently without disturbing the museum, at the same time in provide aesthetic value and purpose and it provide a new sense of balance to the overall structure.

Conclusion, architecture and the designer need to learn all the context of the work, building history, significance to society location, purpose of the addition and visual harmony with the principle of ‘Architecture of Additions’. It is crucial to evaluate what separates successful examples from the rest, and explore the potentials of this artwork of balancing the old and the new and may be the perfect balance between contemporary and historical architecture.

The Imitation Game

I was quickly surfing for the storyline and the movie trailer, when I get heard about all of us is going to watching ‘The Imitation Game’. Well, I’m an ICT base student from secondary school, so I’m not quite surprise when I saw then name of “Alan Turing”. I do have a little knowledge about him and I’m not to say about how brilliant he creates such prefect machine named “Christopher”.

This movie really emotional, it gets me a lot, it really covers lots of issues, and the feeling was upside down like gets a ride of roller coaster. School violence and homosexual was the main part that was really reminds me allots.

I have the guts that confirmed every school do happened school violence case. When I heard a really depressing quote said by Alan, Do you know why people like violence? It is because it feels good. Humans find violence deeply satisfying. But remove the satisfaction, and the act becomes... hollow.

It reminds vividly me when I was 13, a teenage who believed when you get stronger, not bodies dare to bully you. This thinking was kind  naïve and straightforward, I’m not going to share who I bully or bully by someone else .This was happened , the class of boys always get to bully a poor guy a lots, apply gum on his chair, throwing his bag into dustbin and others, well I’m the one who assisted those hateful boys. When he gets suffering, we all gets laugh, maybe of the satisfaction but will feel very depress after that. As long this was happened few years, I was feel very sorry to that guy that I’m not helping him , I wish I can truly ask for apology to that guy, I’m not asking for a forgiveness , I just hope I can put down the heavy loads in my deepest heart .

Homosexual is quite sensitive been load out in Malaysia; luckily I was born in a family which really opens minded. I do have some homo friends, mostly of them are in the closet .Surprisely, I have met a pair of awesome homo couple, they shared their story, to me they are not just couple; they are like family to each other’s, like us. Mostly people are not acceptable homosexual, they said is a trend! Disgusting! A disease, need to be treat! For the deepest questioning, who want to be discriminate? I confirm nobody will, and I believe homo, they are born this ways just like us like heterosexual.

Imagine you forced a homo to become straight, he or she will gets married, but never happy. The Law of attraction is only applying on your own self, not the others. The conclusion, they might divorce soon ,suffer on their marriage or one of their life partners would not get any satisfaction of their life, marriage or sex.

I always remind myself, we all inspired each other’s, and there are no such things as perfection. I don’t really care who is homo either straight, as long they did not harm, they are always good person to me, like Alan Turing or Apple CEO Tim Cook, who really have a lots of contributions to the society, they are need to respect more than discriminate.

ART vs. Design: Are They The Same Thing?

I’m study Interior Architecture in UCSI, but my assignment majority more to Art field. Many people keep questioning me, art and design, are they the same thing? For me, no there are not, both of them have their own defining characteristics.  Art mostly have emotional context, it sometimes spark question, varied meaning, is an individual sport, has meaning and seldom usable. But design is more different to art, it solve problem, provide information, functional, can be taught and learned and purposely created for a client.

When art apply on architecture, I name itartistic design.” Well, La Sagrada Familia in Spain is the best building to describe as artistic design. I have done a compare between La Sagrada Familia and Falling Water, both of them are the best design to me, but different characteristic and definition. I always admired things that really do not feel existed. I always think La Sagrada Familia is better than Falling Water, why? Because if you look at the detail,  you might feel the creative and the patient of the architecture itself , the organic windows , pillars ,ceiling, it really takes a lots of time , that’s why it still haven’t  finish yet. Falling water is very chic, postmodern, is really base on the technique, how you apply the building without destroy the environment. Frank Lloyd Wright do have the skill that I must say, I think mostly people can come out this idea more.

When my lecturer ask us in class, how would you think art apply on architecture, do you like it? Mostly I heard the answer is no, is a waste. For me, it depends on the situation, not every building suitable, sometimes we should embrace more. Disneyland is a very dreamy place, mostly their building more to artistic design, imagine when Disneyland build with postmodern, Mickey and Minnie doesn’t come out from the castle anymore, but from a very chic building, what will pop out from your mind? Okay, I said mine, What the……Where’s my childhood, bring back my childhood!!

Let’s jump out of the box, apply design and art into fashion segment. If you really a fashion lover, you do know about Christian Dior” ,there’s  an ex designer name John Galliano, the current designer name Raf Simons, each designer  have their own design characteristic. If you compare both designer collections, you found out John’s collection more to artistic, dramatic more but Raf’s collection more to postmodern and chic. The fans of Christian Dior said Dior was totally losing a brilliant designer like John is the biggest mistake, but why Dior still hires Raf? It makes sense, because Raf benefits to the company more, postmodern and simple design really been acceptable more by society, but John’s collection more to display and exhibition.

For me, there’s no best design in the planet, because design is very subjective and wide. If your design caught attraction from others peoples, maybe is he or she was their cups of tea, while somebody don’t. Be grateful to your design and proud of it, one day somebody will embraced more to your design and bright your career.
